One of the Greatest Upsets in Super Bowl History
Super Bowl III was the third AFL-NFL World Championship Game between the heavy underdog American Football League champion New York Jets and the National Football League champion Baltimore Colts. Played in 1969, it was the first Super Bowl victory for the AFL.
After the Baltimore Colts won the 1968 NFL title, they were considered one of the best teams in football, even stronger than Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers who had won the first two Super Bowls. Forced to replace their injured starting quarterback Johnny Unitas with veteran Earl Morrall at the start of the season, the team’s chances to reach the Super Bowl seemed doomed. But fortune was on their side as Morrall led the league in passer rating and went on to have the best year of his career, helping the team win ten games in a row. The Colts offense ranked second in the NFL in points scored and their defense led in fewest points allowed. They ended the season with an NFL best record of 13-1.
The AFL teams did not get the same respect as those of the higher caliber talent of the NFL. Although the New York Jets finished their regular season 11-3 and defeated the Oakland Raiders to win the AFL Championship Game, they were not favored to win against the Colts in Super Bowl III. The Jets did have plenty of offensive weapons in wide receiver Don Maynard, wide receiver George Sauer, Jr., fullback Matt Snell, halfback Emerson Boozer, and kicker Jim Turner, all who made considerable contributions during the season to elevate the team to the top. New York also had a brash quarterback named Joe Namath who guaranteed a victory prior to the game.
Namath appeared at the Miami Touchdown Club three days before the Super Bowl and was confronted by a Colts fans. In response, he declared to the audience, “We’re gonna win the game. I guarantee it.” Head coach Weeb Ewbank of the Jets was not happy with his quarterback’s boast, but Namath and his teammates felt angry and insulted that they were 18-point underdogs.
Thanks to a pass from Baltimore quarterback Earl Morrall that was intercepted by Jets cornerback Randy Beverly in the end zone for a touchback, New York held on to a 7-0 lead in the first half of the game. This was the first time an AFL team led in the Super Bowl. The Colts couldn’t get much going on offense in the second half as the Jets dominated the third quarter. Head coach Don Shula even took Morrall out of the game and replaced him with quarterback Johnny Unitas in hopes of sparking their offense.
Turnovers proved costly for the Colts despite Unitas having more pass completions and passing yards than Morrall. The New York Jets were victorious as they stunned the Colts by defeating them by a score of 16-7. Not only did Joe Namath make good on his boast about a guaranteed win, he was named the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player.
